About Jim Corbett National Park
Jim Corbett National Park, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, holds the distinction of being India's first national park, established in 1936 as Hailey National Park. Later renamed in honor of the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, this 520 square kilometer wilderness is where India's wildlife conservation movement truly began.
The park became the launching ground for Project Tiger in 1973, India's ambitious tiger conservation program that has since become a global model for wildlife protection. Today, with a thriving population of over 230 Bengal tigers, Corbett stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts and offers one of the best tiger-sighting experiences in the world.
The diverse landscape of Corbett - from the vast grasslands of Dhikala to the dense sal forests of Bijrani, from the riverine habitats along Ramganga to the hilly terrain of Durga Devi - supports an incredible array of wildlife. Asian elephants roam in large herds, leopards prowl the forests, gharials bask on riverbanks, and over 600 species of birds fill the air with their calls.

Each season has its charm - winter for birding, summer for tiger sighting, and post-monsoon for lush landscapes.
Safari booking is done through the official website corbettonline.uk.gov.in. Create an account, select your zone (Bijrani, Dhikala, Jhirna, or Durga Devi), choose date and shift (morning/evening), enter visitor details with ID proofs, and pay online. Bookings open 45 days in advance. For Dhikala, book at least 30 days ahead due to high demand. After getting the permit, book a registered Gypsy and guide separately.
Jeep Safari (Gypsy) is a private vehicle seating 6 people, offering flexibility to stop and wait at tiger sightings. Cost: Rs. 5,000-8,000 per vehicle. Available in all zones. Canter Safari is a shared 20-seater bus at Rs. 1,500-2,000 per person, only for Dhikala zone. It covers more distance but offers less flexibility. For serious wildlife enthusiasts, Jeep Safari is recommended; Canter is good for budget travelers or first-timers.
Dhikala zone has the highest tiger density and best sighting probability due to its vast grasslands (chaurs) where tigers are easily visible. Bijrani is the second-best option with good tiger population and easier access. Jhirna has resident tigers and being open year-round, offers monsoon sighting opportunities. Tiger sighting ultimately depends on luck, timing (summer is best), and patience. Early morning safaris have higher success rates.
Yes! Forest Rest Houses (FRH) inside the park offer overnight stays. Dhikala has the most options including Dhikala Forest Lodge, Gairal, Sultan, and Sarapduli rest houses. These must be booked through corbettonline.uk.gov.in well in advance. Rates: Rs. 2,500-6,000 per night including meals and safaris. The experience of staying inside the jungle, hearing tiger calls at night, is unmatched. Availability is limited, so book 30-45 days ahead.
Essential items: Valid ID proof (as per booking), printed/downloaded e-permit, camera with telephoto lens, binoculars, neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors), sunscreen, hat/cap, sunglasses, water bottle, light snacks, and basic medicines. Avoid perfumes/deodorants as animals detect scents. Carry a jacket even in summer as mornings are cool. Phone on silent mode. Do NOT carry plastic bags - they are banned in the park.
Absolutely! Corbett is one of the safest national parks for families. Children above 5 years can join safaris. They love spotting deer, elephants, and birds. The vehicle never leaves designated routes, and you always have a trained guide. Many resorts offer kids activities, nature walks, and educational programs. Bijrani and Jhirna zones are recommended for families. Night stays at Dhikala are magical but book comfortable rest houses.
Safari timings vary by season: Winter (Nov-Feb): Morning 6:30 AM-10:00 AM, Evening 1:30 PM-5:30 PM. Summer (Mar-Jun): Morning 5:30 AM-10:00 AM, Evening 2:30 PM-6:30 PM. Each safari is 3-4 hours. Dhikala Canter safari is longer (5-6 hours) as it goes deeper. Gates close strictly on time - reach 30 minutes early. Morning safaris generally have better wildlife activity.

Project Tiger is India's tiger conservation program launched in 1973 with Jim Corbett as its first tiger reserve. When started, India had only 1,800 tigers; today it exceeds 3,600+. Corbett's significance: 1) First national park of India (1936), 2) Named after Jim Corbett, legendary hunter-turned-conservationist, 3) One of the highest tiger densities in India (230+ tigers), 4) Proof that conservation works. The park remains a model for wildlife management worldwide.
Monsoon (July-September) is off-season in Corbett with most zones closed except Jhirna. Tiger sighting in Jhirna during monsoon is possible but challenging due to dense vegetation, leeches, and unpredictable weather. However, the park looks stunning with greenery and waterfalls. Jhirna has perennial water sources, so animals stay in the area. If monsoon is your only option, book Jhirna zone and keep expectations moderate. Many prefer this season for solitude and photography.
Corbett hosts incredible biodiversity: Wild elephants (300+), leopards, sloth bears, Himalayan black bears, wild boars, sambar deer, spotted deer, barking deer, langurs, gharials, mugger crocodiles, and monitor lizards. Over 600 bird species including Great Hornbill, kingfishers, eagles, and owls. Even if you miss the tiger, you'll see plenty of wildlife. Elephants are almost guaranteed in Dhikala and Jhirna. Bird lovers find Durga Devi zone paradise.
From Delhi: Jim Corbett (Ramnagar) is 260 km, approximately 5-6 hours by road via Moradabad. NH9 is the route. From Nainital: 65 km, approximately 2 hours via Kaladhungi. From Kathgodam (nearest railway): 70 km, 2 hours. Nearest airport: Pantnagar (82 km). Best option from Delhi is driving or hiring a taxi. Volvo buses run to Ramnagar from Delhi ISBT. Many packages include Delhi transfers.
Dhikala is Corbett's crown jewel and most scenic zone. Special features: 1) Vast grasslands (chaurs) offering unobstructed wildlife views, 2) Ramganga Reservoir attracting elephants and gharials, 3) Highest tiger density in the park, 4) Only zone with overnight stay inside core area, 5) Elephant safari available, 6) Stunning sunrise/sunset views. The 40 km drive through dense jungle to reach Dhikala is an experience itself. Book 30+ days ahead - it sells out fast.
Strict rules for safari: 1) Stay inside vehicle at all times, 2) No loud noises or sudden movements, 3) Don't litter - plastic is banned, 4) No smoking or alcohol, 5) Wear neutral colors (no bright/white), 6) No flash photography, 7) Maintain silence near wildlife, 8) Follow guide/driver instructions, 9) No feeding animals, 10) Phone on silent, 11) No standing in vehicle, 12) Respect vehicle capacity limits. Violations can result in fines and blacklisting from future permits.
Edward James "Jim" Corbett (1875-1955) was a British-Indian hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author. He killed over 30 man-eating tigers and leopards that had killed 1,200+ people in Kumaon-Garhwal. But he was also a pioneering conservationist who advocated for wildlife protection. His books "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" and "The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag" are classics. The park, originally Hailey National Park, was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1957 in his honor. His former home in Kaladhungi is now a museum.
