About Nainital - The Lake District of India
Nestled in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas at an altitude of 2,084 meters, Nainital is one of India's most beloved hill stations. Often called the "Lake District of India," this picturesque town is centered around the stunning emerald-green Naini Lake, surrounded by seven majestic hills known as "Sapta-Shring" - Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta, and Sher-Ka-Danda.
The town was discovered by British sugar trader P. Barron in 1841, who was so captivated by its beauty that he built the first European house here. Soon, Nainital became a favorite summer retreat for the British and served as the summer capital of the United Provinces. The colonial legacy lives on in the charming architecture, churches, and the famous Mall Road that wraps around the lake.
Today, Nainital attracts over 50 lakh tourists annually who come to enjoy boating on the serene lake, ride the cable car to Snow View Point, trek through dense oak forests, and experience the perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and spiritual heritage at the sacred Naina Devi Temple.

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva was carrying the body of Goddess Sati after her self-immolation, her eyes (naina in Hindi) fell at this spot, creating the lake. This makes Naini Lake one of the 64 Shakti Peeths. The Naina Devi Temple on the lake's northern shore marks this sacred spot. Another legend says the lake was created when sage Atri Muni couldn't find water for rituals in the seven hills, so he dug a hole that filled with water from the divine Mansarovar Lake.
