Tehri Dam Lake: Uttarakhand's Adventure Capital

Walking across it — with the deep blue water far below — is an experience in itself. It is located about 30 km from New Tehri and is well worth the detour.

New Tehri Town

New Tehri is a planned hill town that replaced the submerged Old Tehri. While it lacks the organic charm of older hill towns, it has a grid of clean roads, a main market, hotels, and government offices. The viewpoints above New Tehri offer sweeping vistas of the reservoir and the Himalayan ranges beyond. The town itself is a useful base for exploring the lake and the surrounding region.

How to Reach Tehri Lake

From Rishikesh: The most popular approach is via Rishikesh–Tehri road (NH94), a distance of approximately 85 km. Shared taxis and buses run regularly from Rishikesh bus stand. Journey time is 2.5–3.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

From Dehradun: Distance is around 100 km via Chamba. Buses and taxis are available from Dehradun ISBT. Journey time is 3–4 hours.

From Delhi: Take the Delhi–Haridwar–Rishikesh expressway, then continue to Tehri. Total distance is approximately 330 km; plan for 7–8 hours by road.

Nearest Railway Station: Rishikesh (85 km). Haridwar (105 km) has better connectivity if you are coming from Delhi by train.
