Nainital district is the jewel of Kumaon, a landscape of shimmering lakes, dense oak and rhododendron forests, and hill stations that have charmed visitors since the colonial era. The eponymous Nainital town, built around the pear-shaped Naini lake at 2,084 metres, is one of India's most iconic hill stations. Nainital tourism draws millions each year, but the district's true depth lies in its constellation of lakes — Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal, Khurpatal — each with a distinct personality and relative tranquillity compared to the busy Mall Road in Nainital.
Jim Corbett National Park, India's oldest tiger reserve and one of the world's most celebrated wildlife destinations, occupies the lower Terai foothills of Nainital district. Corbett's Dhikala zone, accessible only by jeep safari with forest department permission, offers the finest tiger and elephant encounters in northern India. Pangot, 15 km from Nainital town, is one of Uttarakhand's premier birding destinations with over 580 recorded species. Mukteshwar (2,285 m), perched dramatically above Nainital, combines a revered Shiva temple with a famous government fruit research station.
Kainchi Dham, the ashram of the late saint Neem Karoli Baba near Bhowali, has gained global prominence as a pilgrimage site attracting devotees including prominent figures from Silicon Valley. Sattal, a cluster of interconnected freshwater lakes in an oak forest, is a peaceful retreat for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Nainital's travel guide is incomplete without mentioning the Naina Devi temple on the northern bank of Naini lake, the Cable Car (ropeway) to Snow View Point, and the historic colonial buildings like St. John's Church that dot the Mall Road.

When to go
Best time to visit Nainital
Peak tourist season for Nainital town. The lake is at its most beautiful. Jim Corbett wildlife safaris are excellent before the park closes for monsoon (June 15). Mukteshwar, Bhimtal, and Sattal are delightful. Expect crowds and higher hotel rates in May–June.
Jim Corbett's Dhikala and most forest zones close from June 15 to November 15 for monsoon. Nainital town gets heavy rainfall. The lakes and forests are lush and atmospheric, but landslides can disrupt the Kathgodam–Nainital road.
Jim Corbett reopens in mid-November. Nainital town is quieter and charming in autumn. Kainchi Dham is peaceful. Birding at Pangot and Sattal peaks. One of the best times to visit Nainital district overall.
Nainital town can receive snowfall in January, turning the lake and hills magical. Jim Corbett's Dhikala zone is prime tiger territory in cold mornings. Mukteshwar sees snow. The Mall Road is quiet — ideal for peaceful lake walks.
Getting there
How to reach Nainital
Nainital is 290 km from Delhi via Moradabad–Kashipur–Haldwani. The drive takes 7–8 hours. Haldwani (34 km from Nainital) is the plains gateway and has frequent bus connections. Jim Corbett's Ramnagar gate is 130 km from Nainital and 260 km from Delhi. AC Volvo buses run from Anand Vihar ISBT Delhi to Haldwani and Nainital.
Kathgodam Railway Station (34 km from Nainital) is the nearest railhead, connected to Delhi (Ranikhet Express, Corbett Park Link Express — journey: 6.5–8 hours from New Delhi). Ramnagar Station serves Jim Corbett visitors with trains from Delhi and Lucknow. Taxis and shared jeeps connect Kathgodam to Nainital.
Pantnagar Airport (67 km from Nainital, 20 km from Haldwani) has flights to Delhi operated by Alliance Air and occasional seasonal carriers. For more reliable connections, Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (282 km) or Delhi IGI Airport (290 km) are alternatives. Taxis from Pantnagar airport to Nainital take about 2 hours.
