Roopkund Trek

Roopkund is Uttarakhand's most dramatic high-altitude trek. The destination is a shallow glacial lake at 5,029 m that holds several hundred human skeletons, likely victims of a catastrophic hailstorm around 800 CE. The lake is only ice-free for two brief windows in May–June and September–October.

The route from Lohajung climbs through Didna village, Bedni Bugyal (the largest alpine meadow in Asia at 3,354 m), and Patar Nachauni before the final push to Junargali pass (5,100 m) and the lake. The views of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul from the ridge above the lake are among the best in Uttarakhand. This trek requires prior high-altitude experience.
