Gun Hill is Mussoorie's second-highest point at 2,024 m, connected to the Mall Road below by a 400-metre ropeway that whisks visitors up in about five minutes. On a clear day the viewpoint gives a wide panorama of the Himalayan snowline — including the Gangotri and Yamunotri ranges — as well as the Doon valley and Shiwalik foothills to the south. The name comes from a colonial-era cannon that was fired from the hill at noon daily so that residents could set their watches, a practice that continued until Indian independence.
At the summit there are telescopes for hire that let visitors pick out distant peaks, a small food court, a photography studio offering Pahadi dress costumes, and a few viewpoint stalls. The ropeway operates from approximately 8 am to 9 pm and the ride is the main attraction in itself, offering aerial views over the ridgeline. Gun Hill is heavily visited on weekends; early morning and weekday visits offer calmer conditions and better mountain visibility before clouds build up. It is a standard stop on any Mussoorie itinerary and manageable in 1–2 hours.

Background
History of Gun Hill
Gun Hill takes its name from a practice initiated by the British colonial administration: a cannon (the "noon gun") was fired from the hill at 12 pm daily, providing a time signal for the clocks of Mussoorie's residents before reliable timepieces were common. The practice began in the mid-19th century and was one of several such signals used across British India. The cannon was ceremonially retired after Indian independence in 1947.
The ropeway connecting Mall Road to Gun Hill was installed in the latter half of the 20th century and became Mussoorie's most popular paid attraction, turning what was previously a climb into a ride. The summit viewpoint was formalised with the telescope stalls, food court and photography studio that now characterise the experience.
