Joshimath is the last major town before Badrinath on NH-7 and the base for the Auli ski slopes, the Valley of Flowers and several high-altitude trekking routes. Sitting at 1,890 m on a terrace above the Alaknanda, it has hotels, ATMs, pharmacies and connectivity that the higher pilgrim towns lack.
In January 2023 the town made global headlines when cracks appeared in over 800 houses due to land subsidence — a combination of poorly planned construction, geology and increasing groundwater pressure. Recovery continues, but the town remains functional and is the essential overnight stop for anyone heading to Badrinath or Auli.

Activities at Joshimath
Skiing at Auli
Auli has 2.5 km of groomed ski runs between 2,519 m and 3,049 m, with a gondola and chairlifts. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) runs ski packages in January–March; private operators also rent equipment and give lessons.
Kuari Pass Trek
A 36 km moderate trek starting from Auli or Dhak village, crossing the Kuari Pass at 3,640 m and descending to Tapovan. The route passes through dense bugyals (high-altitude meadows) with views of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary ridge.
Gondola ride to Auli
The 4 km cable car from Joshimath to Auli is Asia's longest gondola by some measures and rises 1,650 m — the views of Mana Parbat, Hathi Parvat and Nanda Ghunti are exceptional even for non-skiers. Operates year-round.
Valley of Flowers day trip
Drive to Govindghat (20 km), trek or take a pony to Ghangaria (13 km), and reach the UNESCO World Heritage valley for its peak bloom in late July–August. A full day-trip is impossible; plan 2 nights at Ghangaria.
Narsingh Temple visit
The Narsingh Mandir in Joshimath centre is a year-round active shrine housing an idol of Vishnu in his Narsingh (man-lion) avatar. It is the winter seat of the Badrinath deity's throne palanquin during the months when Badrinath is closed.

How to reach Joshimath
Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (272 km, approximately 9 hrs). Helicopter services connect Joshimath/Auli to Dehradun seasonally through private operators.
Rishikesh (253 km) is the nearest practical railhead, with connections to Delhi and major cities. From Rishikesh, shared jeeps and GMOU buses reach Joshimath in 8–9 hours.
Dehradun to Joshimath is approximately 280 km via Rishikesh–Devprayag–Rudraprayag–Chamoli on NH-7. The journey takes 9–10 hours by car. GMOU buses depart Rishikesh bus stand daily from 5 am.

Background
History of Joshimath
Joshimath's name is a contracted form of Jyotirmath — the math (monastic seat) of light — established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE as one of his four cardinal seats of Vedic learning (along with Sringeri, Puri and Dwarka). The Shankaracharya tradition holds that Joshimath is the northern pitha and its Shankaracharya presides over the northern quarter of Hindu spiritual geography.
The town served as the administrative centre for the Garhwal kingdom's northern territories and was the last stop on the ancient pilgrimage-trade route to Tibet via Niti and Mana passes. Before 1962, merchants from the Johar, Bhotia and other trans-Himalayan trading communities would winter in towns like Joshimath and Badrinath before ascending to Tibet in summer.
In January 2023, a cascade of cracks appeared in over 800 houses across multiple wards of Joshimath — roads split, walls separated, and several hotels had to be evacuated. Scientists attributed the subsidence to a combination of a buried glacial lake, unplanned construction over unstable moraine deposits, and water seepage from infrastructure projects. The episode put the town on international front pages and reignited debate about construction along fragile Himalayan geological zones.

- Is Joshimath safe to visit after the 2023 land subsidence?
- Yes — the main bazaar, Narsingh temple, gondola base station and most hotels are operational. The affected wards (Sunil, Manohar Bagh) had the worst cracking; these are residential areas tourists would not normally stay in. Check current news before travelling if concerned.
- Can I do Badrinath as a day trip from Joshimath?
- Yes — Badrinath is 50 km (1.5 hrs each way). Leave by 6 am, complete darshan and be back by 1–2 pm comfortably. This is the standard pattern for acclimatising pilgrims.
- When does the Auli gondola operate?
- The gondola runs year-round (except maintenance closures, typically early December). Ski season is December–March. Summer visitors (May–June) get the best clear-sky mountain views.
- What is the Inner Line Permit situation for Joshimath?
- Joshimath itself requires no permit. The road beyond Badrinath to Mana (3 km) and onward toward the Mana Pass is a restricted zone — Indian nationals can visit Mana village freely but need permits beyond that. Foreign nationals require permits for Mana Pass and the high passes.
- Is Joshimath good for beginners to high altitude?
