Kainchi Dham is the ashram established by Neem Karoli Baba in 1962 on a hairpin bend (kainchi means scissors) of the road between Bhowali and Ranikhet in the Koshalaganga valley. Maharaj-ji, as he was known, attracted a remarkable cross-section of followers — among them Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), who wrote Be Here Now after his time here, and subsequently Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Julia Roberts have all visited the ashram and spoken publicly about its influence.
The ashram itself is a collection of simple buildings around a Hanuman temple on the river. It is open to all visitors and entry is free. The annual Bhandara on 15 June — the anniversary of the ashram's founding — draws over 100,000 devotees and is one of the largest gatherings in Kumaon. Outside of that date the ashram is serene, and the surrounding Koshalaganga valley is one of the prettiest stretches of road in the Nainital hills.

How to reach Kainchi Dham
Kainchi Dham is on NH-9, 17 km from Nainital and 9 km from Bhowali. Taxis and shared jeeps ply the route from Nainital and Haldwani regularly.
Kathgodam is the nearest railhead (57 km). Taxis are available from Kathgodam to Kainchi via Bhowali.
Pantnagar Airport (80 km) is the nearest airport. Taxi to Kainchi via Haldwani and Bhowali takes around 2.5 hours.

Neem Karoli Baba (c. 1900–1973) established the Kainchi Dham ashram in 1964 on a bend of the Kosi river in the narrow Kainchi gorge. He was a Vaishnava saint renowned for miracles and unconditional love, and his teachings centred on service (seva) to all beings. His disciples — including Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), who wrote the seminal spiritual memoir Be Here Now — spread his influence globally throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The ashram's international fame grew when Steve Jobs visited in 1974, a journey he later described as profoundly shaping his philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.
