Ramnagar is the commercial town at the foothills of the Kumaon Himalaya that serves as the primary entry point for Jim Corbett National Park, India's oldest national park established in 1936. The town has a railway terminus on the Moradabad–Ramnagar branch line, making it accessible by direct trains from Delhi and other plains cities. The Corbett Tiger Reserve's main reception centre, where all zone-wise safari permits must be obtained, is located at Ramnagar, and most visitors stay here before fanning out to the various buffer and core zones.
The Jim Corbett Museum, housed in Choti Haldwani — the village Corbett gifted to his neighbours — is a short drive from Ramnagar and commemorates the hunter-turned-conservationist who wrote The Man-Eaters of Kumaon. The Dhikala zone, the premier zone for tiger and elephant sightings, is roughly 50 km from Ramnagar through the reserve. Ramnagar itself has limited tourist appeal beyond its role as a logistics hub, but it offers a wide range of hotels, safari operators, and jeep hire services for Corbett-bound travellers.

Corbett Safari
Jeep and canter safaris enter multiple zones of Corbett National Park — Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi, and Dhikala. Book well in advance online through the Uttarakhand Forest Department portal; Dhikala zone requires the most advance planning.
Corbett Museum Visit
The museum at Kaladhungi occupies Jim Corbett's actual winter home and contains his personal photographs, hunting trophies, letters, and memorabilia. It is a well-maintained heritage property open Tuesday–Sunday.
Garjia Devi Temple
The temple of Garjia Devi sits on a large boulder in the middle of the Kosi river, accessible by a short bridge. It is an atmospheric Shakti shrine that draws both pilgrims and tourists passing on the Corbett highway.
Corbett Waterfall

How to reach Ramnagar
Delhi to Ramnagar is 260 km via Moradabad and Kashipur (5–6 hrs). From Nainital it is 65 km. Buses and shared taxis operate from Kathgodam and Haldwani.
Ramnagar is a railway terminus with direct trains from Delhi (Annand Vihar/Old Delhi). The Corbett Park Link Express and other trains connect Delhi to Ramnagar directly — journey time approximately 6 hrs.
Pantnagar Airport (80 km from Ramnagar) has limited daily flights from Delhi. Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (250 km) is an alternative for those combining with Uttarakhand hill stations.

Background
History of Ramnagar
Jim Corbett, the hunter-turned-conservationist who lends his name to the park, was born in Nainital in 1875 and spent much of his life in this Terai region. He hunted the man-eating tigers and leopards that terrorised villages across Kumaon in the early 20th century, later writing about them in books like 'Man-Eaters of Kumaon' — among the best-selling wildlife books ever published. His winter home at Kaladhungi, 22 km from Ramnagar, was his operational base during many of these hunts.
The national park itself was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park — India's first national park. It was renamed Ramganga National Park after independence, then renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1957, nine years after Corbett's death in Kenya. Corbett's advocacy for wildlife conservation in his later years, and his books that drew international attention to Indian wildlife, are credited with influencing the park's establishment.
Ramnagar serves as the gateway town to the park and the administrative headquarters for Corbett Tiger Reserve. The town itself has grown significantly as wildlife tourism increased, with resort development along the Kosi river transforming it from a small Terai market town into a significant nature tourism hub over the past two decades.
