Surkanda Devi temple sits at 2,757 m on a forested ridge in the Tehri Garhwal district, reached by a 2 km paved trail from Kaddukhal on the Chamba–Mussoorie road. The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas — sites where parts of Sati's body are said to have fallen — and is dedicated to the goddess Surkanda (a form of Parvati). The hilltop position gives sweeping views of the Himalayan snowline to the north and the Doon valley to the south. On clear days the peaks visible include Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, Kedarnath and Chaukhamba ranges.
The most important festival is Ganga Dussehra (June), when a large fair takes place on the hilltop and pilgrims from across Garhwal make the climb. The trail is paved and manageable for all ages; the climb takes about 45 minutes at a gentle pace. Kaddukhal village at the trailhead has parking, tea stalls and basic lodges. Surkanda Devi is commonly combined with Dhanaulti (8 km away) and Kanatal on a Mussoorie extension itinerary, making it a practical half-day detour on the Mussoorie–Chamba route.

How to reach Surkanda Devi
Dehradun → Mussoorie → Dhanaulti → Kaddukhal (86 km, 2.5–3 hrs). Shared jeeps operate Mussoorie–Chamba and stop at Kaddukhal. Private taxis from Mussoorie or Dehradun.

History of Surkanda Devi
Surkanda Devi is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas — sites where body parts of the goddess Sati fell after Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra dismembered her body to stop Shiva's grief-stricken wandering. The head of Sati is said to have fallen at Surkanda. The temple has been a pilgrimage site for centuries and is mentioned in medieval texts describing the sacred geography of the Garhwal Himalaya.
The modern trail and approach road from Kaddukhal were developed in the second half of the 20th century, making the site accessible to pilgrims who previously faced a more demanding approach. The Ganga Dussehra mela at the temple is a longstanding regional festival that draws devotees from across Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi and Dehradun districts.
