Bandarpunch, 6,316 m, stands above the Yamunotri valley in Uttarkashi district. The name means monkey’s tail, from the legend that Hanuman put out the fire in his tail on its snows.
It is the peak most people in Dehradun and Mussoorie see without knowing its name — the long white ridge on the northern skyline on a clear winter morning.
The Bandarpunch massif feeds the Yamuna, and the Yamunotri trek from Janki Chatti runs below its western flank.
