Chaukhamba means four pillars — four summits along one ridge at the head of the Gangotri glacier, the highest at 7,138 m. It sits on the Garhwal side of the range in Chamoli district.

It is the peak that anchors the view from Chandrashila summit above Chopta, and it is visible from the Badrinath valley.

The Gangotri glacier at its foot is the source of the Bhagirathi, which becomes the Ganga at Devprayag.

Seeing Chaukhamba

Himalayan views are a morning business. On most of these viewpoints the range is clear at sunrise and gone into haze by eleven, and October to early December gives the cleanest air of the year. Tell us which peaks matter to you and we will plan the mornings around them.
