Neelkanth, 6,596 m, stands directly above Badrinath and is known as the Garhwal Queen for its near-perfect pyramid shape.
Pilgrims at Badrinath see it catch the first sunlight while the temple below is still in shadow — the reason the morning darshan queue forms before dawn.
It is a difficult technical climb and was not summited until 1974, despite standing over one of the most visited shrines in the Himalaya.
