About Milam Glacier Trek
The Milam Glacier trek follows the Johar valley, an ancient trade route between Kumaon and Tibet. Before 1962, Milam village (3,400 m) was a thriving border trading post; it was abandoned after the Indo-China war and remains largely deserted. Trekking here requires an Inner Line Permit from the Pithoragarh District Magistrate's office.
The approach from Munsiyari (2,200 m) passes through several abandoned and semi-occupied villages. Views of the Panchachuli group (the five summits rising above 6,900 m) accompany much of the walk. The route ends at the Milam glacier snout below Hardeol (7,151 m). This is one of Uttarakhand's most remote and historically significant treks.
