About Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek
The Nanda Devi Sanctuary surrounds India's second-highest peak (7,817 m) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Access to the inner sanctuary is strictly controlled; trekkers can approach the outer sanctuary rim from Lata village via the legendary Rishi Ganga gorge. This was the route pioneered by Shipton and Tilman in 1934.
The gorge is a difficult technical trail with river crossings and exposed traverses. Only experienced Himalayan trekkers with full camping equipment should attempt it. Permits from the Wildlife Department in Joshimath are required. The route is rarely visited, which is part of its appeal — days without seeing another trekker are common above the gorge.
