Why visit Thal

  • Witness the dramatic confluence of the Ram Ganga (East) and Saryu rivers at a deep forested gorge
  • Visit the Narayan Ashram (11 km), a pioneering social service institution set in forest solitude at 2,400 m
  • Experience a genuine road-trip pause on the spectacular Pithoragarh–Munsiyari highway
  • Spot Himalayan birds in the dense mixed forests flanking the Saryu river — a rich biodiversity corridor

Thal is a small market town in Pithoragarh district at the confluence of the Ram Ganga East and Saryu rivers, sitting at 915 m in a broad river valley. It lies roughly halfway between Bageshwar and Munsiyari on the main road and serves as a natural pause point for travellers making the long journey north into the Johar Valley. The riverside setting, framed by forested ridges, is pleasant and the town has enough facilities — dhabas, fuel, basic accommodation — to make it a comfortable halt.

A short drive from Thal brings you to the Narayan Ashram, a self-reliant spiritual community founded in 1936 by Narayan Swami in the Sirkha forest above the Saryu. The ashram runs a school for local children, maintains orchards, and welcomes visitors in its guesthouse — a tranquil counterpoint to the town below. The stretch of river at Thal is also notable for the spectacular views of the valley and the large raptors (lammergeier, Himalayan griffon) that circle the thermals above the confluence. It is a modest but characterful stop on the Munsiyari circuit.

Narayan Ashram Visit

Narayan Ashram (11 km from Thal) is one of the remarkable social institutions of the Kumaon hills, founded by Narayan Swami in 1936 to provide education and social services to the remote hill communities. The forested campus at 2,400 m has a guesthouse for visitors and an atmosphere of genuine peaceful purpose.

River-Side Rest

Thal has riverside spots suitable for a rest stop on the Pithoragarh–Munsiyari drive. The cool air, river sound, and forest cover make it an ideal place to break a long mountain drive.

Birdwatching

The mixed forests between Thal and Narayan Ashram are rich in Himalayan birdlife — great barbet, verditer flycatcher, kalij pheasant, and various warblers are regularly seen. The forest road to Narayan Ashram is a particularly good birding walk in the early morning.

Background

History of Thal

Thal sits at the confluence of two of Kumaon's major rivers — the Ram Ganga East (flowing from the Namik Glacier area) and the Saryu (from Bageshwar and the Sarju valley). The confluence has been a sacred tirtha for the local communities, and the forested gorge has prevented large settlement, keeping the area relatively wild compared to Pithoragarh town.

The Narayan Ashram at Chauna (11 km above Thal) was founded in 1936 by Narayan Swami, a social reformer who dedicated his life to education, agriculture, and health services for the remote communities of this borderland. The ashram ran schools and dispensaries at a time when the region had almost no government services. It continues to operate as an educational and social welfare institution, maintaining the forest campus and accepting guests who wish to experience its peaceful environment.

Thal lies on the old mule route from the Pithoragarh plains to the Johar valley (Munsiyari) and beyond to Tibet — a route used for centuries for the trans-Himalayan wool and borax trade. The motorable road replaced the mule path in the 20th century, and Thal is now a functional waypoint on what is one of the most scenic drives in eastern Uttarakhand.

Common questions

Thal FAQ

What is Thal known for?
Thal is known for the confluence of the Ram Ganga East and Saryu rivers, and as the access point for the Narayan Ashram (11 km). It is a scenic transit stop on the Pithoragarh–Munsiyari highway rather than a primary destination in itself.
Why stop at Thal on the way to Munsiyari?
Thal offers a natural break on the drive, the river confluence viewpoint, and access to Narayan Ashram — one of the most interesting and unusual institutions in eastern Kumaon. The forested gorge setting is significantly more dramatic than the road between Pithoragarh and Munsiyari suggests.
How do I reach Narayan Ashram from Thal?
Narayan Ashram is 11 km from Thal on a narrow motorable road (4WD recommended). The drive takes 40–50 minutes. It is also a pleasant 3–4 hour walk through forest if you prefer to trek up.
Is it worth staying overnight at Thal?
Thal itself offers very basic accommodation and is better as a day stop. Staying overnight at Narayan Ashram (if available) is more rewarding for those seeking the forest peace. Most travellers use Thal as a transit pause and overnight at Munsiyari (55 km) or Pithoragarh (45 km).
