Dayara Bugyal is a sprawling alpine meadow at around 3,048 m in Uttarkashi district, covering nearly 28 square kilometres of open grassland on a broad ridge above the Bhagirathi valley. In the summer months of May and June the meadow bursts into a carpet of wildflowers — violets, primulas, brahmakamal and alpine asters — and provides grazing ground for local shepherds. The trek to reach Dayara begins at Barsu village, about 175 km from Dehradun via Uttarkashi, and involves a straightforward 5–6 km climb through deodar and rhododendron forest.
In winter, when the meadow lies under several feet of snow, Dayara Bugyal operates as a basic ski resort run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, catering to beginner and intermediate skiers. The Gui Bugyal, a further meadow extension, allows longer traverses for those with more time. The bugyal also serves as the starting point for the Dodital lake trek, making it a hub for multiple trail routes in the Uttarkashi region. Views from the meadow rim take in Bandarpunch, Srikanth and the upper Bhagirathi ranges.

Activities at Dayara Bugyal
Meadow Walk
The meadow is enormous — walking from one end to the other takes 2–3 hours. The experience of being in an open grassland at 3,000 m with Himalayan peaks surrounding you on three sides is the primary draw. There is no fixed trail across the bugyal; you simply walk.
Skiing (December–February)
Dayara Bugyal is one of the few accessible high-altitude slopes in Garhwal used for natural snow skiing. The Uttarakhand Tourism Department has promoted basic skiing and snowshoe trekking here. Equipment rental and basic instruction are sometimes available through local tour operators.
Gui Bugyal Extension
From Dayara Bugyal, a further walk of 3–4 km leads to Gui Bugyal — a secondary meadow with even fewer visitors and equally commanding views. An overnight camp between the two bugyals is a serene experience.
Birding
The meadow and surrounding treeline is excellent birding habitat — himalayan monal, koklass pheasant, blood pheasant, and various raptors including lammergeier are regularly seen. Spring (May–June) is best for bird activity.

- For skiing in winter, confirm that Uttarakhand Tourism is operating the winter festival/activity camp before planning your visit
- Carry all provisions from Uttarkashi; there are no shops above Barsu village
- June is the peak wildflower season; the meadow changes character dramatically week by week through the month
- Nights at the bugyal are cold even in June — a sleeping bag rated to 0°C is required for camping

How to reach Dayara Bugyal
Dehradun to Uttarkashi is 155 km (5 hrs). From Uttarkashi, Barsu village is 30 km on a narrow road (1.5 hrs by hired vehicle). Shared jeeps from Uttarkashi to Barsu run infrequently; hiring a vehicle is more reliable.
Dehradun (155 km from Uttarkashi) is the nearest railhead. Take a bus or taxi from Dehradun to Uttarkashi (5 hrs), then hired vehicle to Barsu.
Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (165 km from Uttarkashi) has daily Delhi flights. Hire a taxi to Uttarkashi and connect to Barsu by local vehicle.
Where to stay in Dayara Bugyal
- Barsu village has a handful of family-run guesthouses and homestays — basic but clean, with home-cooked meals included
- Raithal (12 km from Barsu) is a larger village with more homestay options and a GMVN rest house

History of Dayara Bugyal
Dayara Bugyal has served as a summer grazing ground for the Van Gujjar and Garhwali herder communities for centuries. The term 'bugyal' (from a Garhwali word for high-altitude meadow) describes the open grasslands above the treeline that support seasonal grazing throughout the Uttarakhand Himalaya. Dayara, at 28 square kilometres, is among the largest of these bugyals and has the longest history of transhumant herding.
The meadow came to wider tourist attention in the late 1990s and 2000s as trekking agencies began promoting it as an accessible alternative to the more demanding Kuari Pass and Roopkund routes. Its proximity to Uttarkashi (the district headquarters) and the short approach trek from Barsu made it particularly attractive for weekend trekkers from Dehradun and Delhi.
Uttarakhand Tourism has intermittently hosted winter skiing and snow festivals at Dayara Bugyal, attempting to develop it as a ski destination. The natural snow conditions are comparable to some established ski resorts, though the lack of permanent infrastructure and the dependence on natural snowfall limits commercial development. The meadow remains primarily a trekking and camping destination with seasonal skiing as a secondary activity.
