Dodital is a pristine lake at 3,024 m in the Uttarkashi district, reached by a 22 km trek from Sangamchatti village (also accessible via Agoda village, 14 km from the lake). The lake is believed locally to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, and a small temple on its bank marks the site — the name "Dodital" is said to derive from "Dodi," a local name for the trout that populate these clear, cold waters. The trek passes through dense forest of oak, rhododendron, deodar and Himalayan maple, gaining about 1,500 metres from Sangamchatti.
The natural brown trout (Salmo trutta) in Dodital are protected and fishing is prohibited, but the lake's clear water makes the fish easily visible from the bank. A forest rest house and a few small tea stalls operate at the lake in season. Dodital is also the starting point for the Darwa Pass (4,110 m) extension trek that connects to Dayara Bugyal — a 2-day route that is increasingly popular for combining two iconic destinations. The best seasons are April–June (rhododendrons in bloom) and September–November (clear skies, golden forest).

How to reach Dodital
Dehradun → Uttarkashi (185 km, 5–6 hrs). From Uttarkashi, Sangamchatti is 10 km by taxi. Trek 22 km to Dodital (2 days). Shared jeeps from Uttarkashi to Sangamchatti available.
Nearest airport: Jolly Grant, Dehradun (205 km total). Taxi to Uttarkashi then shared jeep to Sangamchatti.
Nearest railhead: Dehradun or Haridwar. Buses from Rishikesh/Haridwar to Uttarkashi (6–7 hrs) then taxi to Sangamchatti.

- Camping near the lake is the most common option; tent and sleeping bag must be carried from Sangamchatti.

History of Dodital
Dodital lake is associated with the birth of Lord Ganesha — local tradition holds that the goddess Parvati bathed in the lake and subsequently gave birth to Ganesha on its banks. The name "Dodi" is a local Garhwali term for the trout fish, which have inhabited the lake for as long as people can remember. A small Ganesha temple on the lake's bank marks the birthplace and is a site of worship for pilgrims who make the trek.
The lake and its forest surroundings are within the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park buffer zone, explaining the density of wildlife and the protected status of the trout. The Darwa Pass extension linking Dodital to Dayara Bugyal has been known to local herders for centuries; it entered trekking itineraries in the 1980s and is now a recognised multi-day route in Uttarkashi district.
