Uttarkashi Travel Guide

Uttarkashi's claim to antiquity rests on its identification with ancient Barahat — a settlement mentioned in Sanskrit texts as a trade and pilgrimage waypoint on the route to the Gangotri glacier. The suffix kashi (from Kashi, the sacred name of Varanasi) reflects the town's status as a secondary sacred centre, reinforced by the presence of a Kashi Vishwanath Mahadev temple that mirrors the famous Varanasi temple in name and primary deity.

The Gorkha Confederacy controlled much of Uttarkashi district from the 1790s until the Anglo-Gorkha War of 1814–15, when the East India Company drove the Gorkhalis back beyond the Mahakali river. The British administered the area as part of the Kumaon Commission until 1947, using the Bhagirathi valley route for Tibet trade expeditions.

The establishment of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in 1965 — in the aftermath of the 1962 India-China war, partly as a response to the perceived need for mountain-warfare capable forces — transformed Uttarkashi's identity. NIM alumni include most of India's notable Himalayan climbers of the post-independence era, and the institute's expeditions have made first ascents on several peaks in the Garhwal Himalaya.
