When to go

Best time to visit Tehri Garhwal

Summer / Spring (March to June)

Excellent weather at Kanatal and Dhanaulti (15–25°C). Tehri lake water sports are operational. Clear Himalayan views from ridge-top campsites. Devprayag is at its atmospheric best in June before monsoon.

Monsoon (July to September)

Lush green landscapes but landslide risk on the Rishikesh–Devprayag–Srinagar road. Water sports on Tehri lake may be suspended during heavy rain. Best avoided for road trips unless well-planned.

Autumn (October to November)

Post-monsoon is outstanding for Kanatal/Dhanaulti camping and for the Surkanda Devi trek. Crisp air and clear skies define October. Temperatures drop sharply by late November.

Winter (December to February)

Snowfall at Dhanaulti and Kanatal makes these extremely popular snow tourism destinations. Tehri lake remains accessible. Adventure water sports slow down but the reservoir scenery is beautiful in winter light.

How to reach Tehri Garhwal

By Road

New Tehri is 75 km from Rishikesh via Devprayag, and Kanatal is 78 km from Dehradun via Chamba. Regular buses run from Rishikesh ISBT to New Tehri. Dhanaulti is 58 km from Dehradun and 24 km from Mussoorie. Devprayag is 70 km from Rishikesh on the Badrinath highway.

By Train

The nearest railhead is Rishikesh (75 km from New Tehri), well connected to Delhi (approx. 6 hours), Haridwar, and other major cities. From Rishikesh, shared taxis and local buses serve Devprayag, New Tehri, and Srinagar Garhwal regularly throughout the day.

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (115 km from New Tehri) is the nearest airport. Kanatal and Dhanaulti are only 58–78 km from Dehradun airport, making Tehri Garhwal one of the more accessible districts for air travellers. Taxis from the airport can reach Kanatal in about 2 hours.
